As Stonecutters Bridge will be a prominent feature on the Hong Kong skyline, Highways Department organized an international design competition in 2000 with the aim of gathering a world-class conceptual design from the best bridge design teams in the world. The results of the design competition were announced in September 2000. The winning design was highly praised for its aesthetic merit and was taken forward as the reference scheme for further development under a separate design and construction supervision consultancy assignment.
